Importers from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will pay fines, if they have not collected overstayed cargo in Mombasa before February next year.
The Shippers Council of East Africa said that the initiative would help clear a backlog. The council said that a 20' container attracts a storage fee of 25 USD per day, while a 40' container is associated with a fee of 40 USD per day. The East African Community (EAC) Secretariat is expected to publish the names of traders whose cargo are pending at Mombasas port.
